Overview

The quantum/contact realm is the nonordinary environment reached during Protocol X and revisited through B's contact with the Source in the final arc of the original BRZRKR series. Characters use several overlapping descriptions for it, including an in-between place, a contact space, and the Blue Plane. The comic does not provide a formal scientific taxonomy or a stable map. It shows a region in which ordinary distance, time, body, memory, and communication no longer behave as they do in the physical world.[1][2]

The realm matters because it connects the modern government experiment to B's origin. Protocol X is designed around the hope that extreme energy and B's anomalous biology will establish contact with the intelligence responsible for his existence. Instead, B disappears from ordinary space, Diana is altered by the event, and the relationship between them becomes the route by which he returns. The same contact condition later allows B and Diana to reach the Source and to confront the possibility that B's immortality is part of a larger process rather than an isolated mutation.[3][4]

The safest description is therefore functional: the realm is a contact environment between B, Diana, the Source, and connected forms of matter or information. Calling it a literal afterlife, a dream, a parallel universe, or a simple computer simulation goes beyond what the issues establish.

Entry through Protocol X

Protocol X is conducted by the government program after years of studying B's memories, tissue, and regenerative behavior. Caldwell and the research team have learned that B's biology includes impossible amino acids and quantum-scale properties that do not fit a normal human explanation. The experiment treats those properties as a potential interface. The objective is not merely to damage B or create another soldier; the deeper goal is to contact the Source or whatever intelligence sent the signal associated with him.[3]

The procedure places B inside an apparatus and begins a controlled countdown. The issue shows personnel, machinery, monitoring equipment, and the expectation that an energy event will occur at a known threshold. The experiment does not unfold as a conventional transmission. At the critical moment, the environment is overwhelmed, B disappears, and Diana is struck by the same anomalous force. The government's categories fail at the point when the experiment succeeds in making contact.[1]

The disappearance is not presented as death. B remains conscious and able to perceive. Diana and the surviving personnel continue to exist in the physical world, but their relationship to B changes. He is no longer reachable through the ordinary room, instruments, or mission chain. The event creates the first direct separation between B and his body without a normal injury or regeneration sequence.[3]

Time, distance, and embodiment

The contact realm does not use distance in the ordinary sense. B can be separated from Diana by a condition that is neither a conventional location nor a simple signal delay, yet contact remains possible. Diana's altered state gives her a route toward him. The issues depict communication as a combination of intention, energy, memory, and biological connection rather than a radio or telephone exchange.[2]

B's body is also treated differently inside the realm. His physical identity persists even while ordinary boundaries become unstable. He can move, perceive, and act, but the environment does not behave like a battlefield or a hospital. The realm exposes him to information about his origin and to a presence larger than the human institutions that have studied him. His continued awareness confirms that consciousness and bodily location can be separated in BRZRKR without proving that they are permanently independent.

Diana's presence is equally important. She is not simply an outside observer looking at a remote projection. Protocol X alters her and creates a connection that allows her to perceive or reach B. The event gives her abilities that later include energy manipulation, interruption of electrical systems, and communication across conditions of separation. The comic does not reduce these changes to a medical diagnosis. They are the consequences of contact with the same unknown system that produced B's anomalous life.[2][5]

The Source and the realm

The Source, also described as the Pollinator or cosmic father, is the intelligence associated with B's conception and the later transmission of technology and abilities. B's earliest origin memories involve a lightning event and a nonhuman presence. In the final arc, the contact realm provides the setting in which those fragments become a direct encounter. The Source does not appear as a human monarch or a machine with a complete technical manual. It is shown as a powerful intelligence whose motives remain partly unreadable.[4]

The realm may be part of the Source's network, or it may be the condition through which the Source communicates with biological beings. The issues support the existence of a connection but do not name its physics. The same images can be read as a network, a dimension, a field of memory, or an interface between material and nonmaterial states. Each reading explains some evidence and leaves other evidence unresolved.

B's contact with the Source is not a simple revelation that answers every question. He learns more about the origin of his immortality and about the scale of the intelligence involved, but the encounter retains uncertainty. The Source's presence does not provide a complete chronology of every event in B's eighty-thousand-year life, nor does it prove that all legends about B were directly caused by the Source. The realm expands the mystery rather than closing it.[4]

Connection between B and Diana

The relationship between B and Diana becomes the realm's most stable human anchor. Before Protocol X, Diana uses memory protocols to help B recover information from the earliest periods of his life. Their trust develops inside a system that still treats B as a scientific subject and military asset. Protocol X changes the meaning of that trust. Diana is affected by the experiment, and B later relies on the bond to return from the in-between condition.[1][2]

The connection is not identical to telepathy. The issues show contact, emotional recognition, and the exchange of energy or presence, but they do not provide a clinical definition. Diana can reach B when ordinary instruments cannot, and B can recognize Diana through the altered environment. That is enough to establish a psychic or quantum bond as a narrative fact. It is not enough to specify whether the bond is genetic, electromagnetic, spiritual, or created by the Source.

The bond also changes the power relationship between them. Earlier, Diana controls the room, the drugs, the wires, and the questions. Inside the contact realm, neither person fully controls the conditions. B has experience with the impossible but lacks a reliable map. Diana has scientific training but is now part of the anomaly. Their cooperation becomes reciprocal rather than procedural.[2]

The Blue Plane designation

The term Blue Plane is useful as a continuity label for the visual and conceptual environment associated with the final arc, but the issue's story does not treat it as a complete proper name with a formal definition. The color and visual design distinguish the realm from ordinary scenes, while the characters' experience indicates a space of contact and displacement. A reader should not infer that every blue-tinted memory or Source image is the same location.

The most reliable practice is to distinguish three related things:

  1. the Protocol X event that removes B from ordinary space;
  2. the contact environment in which B and Diana communicate; and
  3. the Source encounter that reveals a larger intelligence and its connection to B.

The story may treat these as one system, several layers of one system, or connected states. The available issues do not settle the question. Using the broader term quantum/contact realm keeps the record accurate while preserving Blue Plane as a recognized alias.[1][4]

Effects on later events

The realm's consequences extend beyond the moment of contact. Diana returns with abilities that make her a participant in the final conflict. B gains access to information that helps him understand the Source, the origin of his powers, and the possibility of a mortal ending. The children born to B and Diana later show inherited or Source-linked traits, including accelerated development and unusual eye coloration. Those traits do not prove that the children have visited the realm, but they demonstrate that contact has consequences beyond the original two participants.[6]

The Source-powered hypercomputer also occupies the border between physical technology and contact intelligence. Caldwell's apparatus attempts to reproduce or exploit phenomena that the government first encountered through B. The orb and related systems are not the realm itself, but they show humans trying to carry an interface back into ordinary space. Their failure and destructive use reinforce the difference between contact and control.[7]

The realm also reframes B's mortality. For most of his life, death is blocked by regeneration. The contact with the Source creates a route toward changing that condition. B's eventual mortality is not a simple medical cure discovered in a laboratory. It is tied to a cosmic encounter, a choice, Diana's presence, and the transfer or removal of a property that had defined his life. The realm is therefore part of the chain that leads from endless survival to an ordinary death.[4]

Memory inside contact space

Memory is not just a subject discussed in the realm; it is one of the ways the realm is navigated. B reaches the earliest parts of his history through Diana's protocols, but the contact sequence places those memories beside live perception. Images of his mother, father, childhood, and first lightning encounter can function as evidence, warning, or emotional pressure at the same time. Diana's presence gives the memories a second witness, while the Source's presence raises the question of whether some images are recollections, transmissions, or both. The issues do not assign a separate storage location to each category. They show a continuity between remembered experience and cosmic contact without declaring that every memory has been implanted by the Source. That distinction matters because B's perfect memory does not make every interpretation of his past automatically correct.[2][4]

Limitations and unknowns

The issues do not establish the realm's boundaries, inhabitants, duration, origin, or ultimate relationship to time. They do not show whether another human can enter without Source-linked biology, whether B could return alone, or whether the environment persists after the final encounter. They do not define a measurable unit for the distance between the physical world and contact space.

The realm is also not a universal explanation for every supernatural event in BRZRKR. Atlantis's gateway, Cthulhu's arrival, the Sorceress's magic, vampirism, and Zosimus's alchemy have their own evidence and should not be collapsed into Protocol X. Similar visual effects do not establish a shared mechanism.

What contact feels like for B

The contact sequences are frightening partly because B cannot rely on the habits that have kept him alive for eighty thousand years. In a physical fight he can read an opponent's stance, use the terrain, and accept injury as the price of movement. In contact space, there is no stable ground and no obvious enemy to strike. His memories arrive beside present perception, and the presence of the Source is powerful without behaving like a person who can be threatened or negotiated with. B is still himself, but the skills built for war no longer guarantee control.

That loss of control brings the emotional history of the series into the foreground. B has spent centuries pretending that nothing can surprise him. The realm proves that immortality is not mastery. He can be wounded, imprisoned, experimented on, and manipulated; now he can also be displaced from his own body and made to confront the intelligence that began his life. The experience does not make him passive. It forces him to ask for help, particularly from Diana, and to accept that another person's presence can be a source of strength rather than another chain.

Diana as the bridge home

Diana's role in the realm is not a technical footnote to Protocol X. She becomes the bridge between B's ancient body and the modern human relationships he has built around it. Before the experiment, she is the person who asks questions and administers the memory process. After the experiment, she is also the person who can feel the disturbance, enter the danger, and call B back. The change is reciprocal: Diana's abilities emerge through contact, while B's return depends on trust that has grown through years of difficult conversations.

The bridge is important because the Source does not offer B a simple route out. Cosmic contact gives him information, but it is Diana who makes that information survivable. Their bond does not erase the scientific language surrounding the event; it adds a human condition to it. B comes back because the experiment has created an opening, because the Source permits or causes a connection, and because Diana refuses to treat his disappearance as an acceptable result.

Contact and agency

The realm changes how agency works in the series. Government personnel build the apparatus, Caldwell selects the conditions, and B's body supplies the anomaly. Yet once the threshold is crossed, no human participant controls the outcome. The same pattern appears in the Source encounter. B can choose how to respond, but he cannot command the intelligence that made him. The possibility of mortality is offered within a situation he did not create, and accepting it requires him to decide what kind of future he wants after a life defined by other people's plans.

For that reason the realm is best understood as a narrative space of negotiation rather than a solved cosmological location. It is where the series places its hardest questions: whether a body can belong to itself, whether memory can be trusted when it is shared, and whether an immortal life has meaning if it cannot be freely ended. The visuals are strange because the questions are strange. The story does not need a map of every corridor to make the encounter consequential.
