The core collecting task is to identify the story, issue or volume, printing, cover, market, and physical treatment. Those facts distinguish official objects without turning every visual difference into a separate narrative.

Why it matters

A clear format vocabulary makes it possible to enjoy the publication history while keeping plot evidence tied to interior stories. It also prevents one object from being counted several times under slightly different sales descriptions.

Collecting information describes publication objects rather than story continuity. A foil treatment, signature, retailer logo, grading label, or new cover can make a copy distinct without adding a new event to B’s life. Official publisher and edition records carry more weight than undated resale descriptions.

A dependable description begins with facts visible on the object or stated by the publisher: issue or book title, printing, credited artist, market, finish, and packaging. Condition, signature provenance, grading, completeness, and ownership belong to the individual copy. Separating edition identity from copy condition prevents scarcity, price, and canon from being confused with one another.

Confirmed limits

No undated marketplace listing establishes an official edition, permanent value, or complete print run. Publisher, campaign, indicia, and catalog records remain the strongest evidence.

Unconfirmed dates, credits, contents, formats, or story connections remain open. Later official material can extend the record, but it should not be anticipated as fact.
